OTTAWA - Canada and the province of Ontario on Wednesday unveiled a C$9-billion ($6.4-billion) support package to help the steel and auto sectors deal with US tariffs and also boost critical mineral support chains.
The measures are the latest in a series of government moves to aid sectors the hardest hit by tariffs.
The two levels of government committed to spend more than C$5-billion on a steel action fund to enable mills to upgrade machinery and manufacture more products that Canada needs and expand to meet demand in non-US markets.
C$2.5 billion will help auto makers boost production of electric vehicles.
Ottawa will spend C$1-billion to develop road links to the mineral-rich but remote Ring of Fire region in Ontario.
