The Deseado Massif

The Deseado Massif in southern Argentina is one of the most prolific epithermal gold and silver regions known in the world. Located in the mining-friendly province of Santa Cruz, it is host to many past and currently producing gold and silver mines, including the world-class Cerro Vanguardia (AngloGold-Ashanti) and Cerro Negro (Newmont) Mines.
The Deseado Massif is young in terms of a mining jurisdiction and has exceptional discovery potential. Modern precious metal exploration and mining started in the 1990s. The two largest mines in the region, Cerro Vanguardia and Cerro Negro, began production in 1998 and 2014, respectively. A more recent mine of significance, Cerro Moro, began production in 2018.
Infrastructure in the region is extensive, providing road access to most areas. Elevations are typically less than 1,000 metres, which makes year-round exploration possible in much of the area.
